September 2025 marked 25 years since the formation of Uniseed. To still be operating after 25 years is quite an achievement, given the difficulty of commercialising early-stage research. Over that time, we have experienced first-hand the ebbs and flows of Australian innovation, including the dot.com crash, the global financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the changes in Governments and associated innovation policy changes; the endless reinvention of technology transfer office business models; and the rise and decline of a numerous venture funds, with nearly all venture fund managers in operation at the time Uniseed was formed no longer active.
In late 2018, through Uniseed, I was fortunate to received recognition as one of the top 5 people worldwide changing the face of university venturing – the only Australian fund in the top 201. Earlier that year, the prestigious journal Nature highlighted the exits of Uniseed investees Fibrotech, Spinifex and Hatchtech as game changers in the Australian biotechnology industry2. In 2023, Uniseed was also named the Most Impactful Research Investment Firm 2023 in Acquisition International Global Excellence Awards3.
The 25th anniversary is a good opportunity to reflect on Uniseed’s journey, not only considering how long the fund has been operating, but also factoring in the significant success Uniseed has had, and the ultimate impact of the fund on the Australian research and innovation ecosystem.
This timing also coincides with my tenure at Uniseed coming to an end. It has been a fun ride with many ups and downs, and I am grateful to the amazing people I have had the privilege to share the journey with, who are highlighted in this story.
