Introduction

Your privacy is important to us. At Uniseed, we are committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about how we collect, use, and share data. By using our website and services, you agree to the practices outlined in this Privacy Policy.

Uniseed Management Pty Ltd (ABN 82 103 546 014) manages venture capital funds investing in research commercialised out of our university and research partners. "Uniseed", "we", "us" and "our" mean that company.

Uniseed Management Pty Ltd (Uniseed) is an Authorised Representative of UIIT Pty Ltd, a holder of Australian Financial Services Licence No. 299900.

We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we give it to, and how you can see it, correct it or complain.

Information We Collect

What we hold depends on your relationship with us.

Some of the below categories may contain sensitive information - a professional association membership, for instance, or something disclosed during anti-money laundering checks. Unless the law permits it, we will not collect sensitive information without your consent.

Wherever reasonable and practicable we collect information directly from you: through this website, by email, over the phone, in meetings, and through our investment and investor onboarding forms. Sometimes we collect it elsewhere, from our university and research partners, co-investors and advisers, portfolio companies, our anti-money laundering and know-your-customer provider, public registers such as ASIC and IP Australia, published research, and public professional profiles.

  • Researchers and founders approaching us. Your name, role, institution or company, contact details, and what you tell us about yourself and your work.
  • Investors and prospective investors. Your name, date of birth, contact details, the entity you represent and your role in it, and the financial and identification material we need to meet our obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) and to confirm your status as a wholesale client. That can include identification documents and information about income, assets and liabilities.
  • Portfolio company directors, officers and employees. Contact details, role, and information arising from our involvement as an investor and, where applicable, a board member.
  • Contacts at our university and research partners, co-investors and advisers. Name, role, organisation and contact details.
  • People who write to us. The contact details and content you send.
  • Please note that if you send us a pitch, we read it and keep a record, including your contact details and a summary of what you sent. We do not sign confidentiality agreements before a first conversation, so please do not send us anything you are not comfortable for us to hold on that basis. Your material is seen by our investment team and, where we need help assessing it, by advisers or technical experts under confidentiality obligations. We do not pass it to companies in our portfolio, and we keep it for three years.
Why we collect it

So that we can assess technologies, companies and founders and carry out due diligence; manage our investments, including board involvement; establish and administer our funds, onboard investors, meet our anti-money laundering obligations and report to our investors; answer your enquiries and keep you informed where you have asked us to; and run our own operations and meet our legal obligations.

We will only use or disclose your information for a different purpose if you have consented, if that purpose is related to the one we collected it for and you would reasonably expect it (directly related, for sensitive information), or if the law requires or authorises it.

  • Provide and improve our services

  • Respond to inquiries and customer support requests

  • Send updates, newsletters, or promotional offers (with consent)

  • Monitor and analyse website usage for performance improvements

  • Ensure legal compliance and prevent fraud

Who we share it with

We do not sell personal information. We hold personal information in Australia and we do not disclose it to overseas recipients. If that changes we will update this policy and take reasonable steps to ensure any overseas recipient handles your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

We may share information we do collect with:

  • the investors in our funds, and the university and research organisations behind Uniseed, when we report on the funds or our investments, and co-investors, advisers and prospective acquirers as part of a transaction, where appropriate and you would reasonably expect it;

  • our service providers (fund administrators, auditors, lawyers, IT providers, and our anti-money laundering and know-your-customer provider) who may use it only for the purpose we engaged them for; and

  • government agencies, regulators and law enforcement, where the law requires or authorises it or it is necessary to protect our rights or someone's safety.

We do not use analytics services, advertising pixels or tracking cookies on this website, and we do not build profiles of visitors. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running. Any cookies set are those the site needs to function; your browser can block or remove them, though some parts of the site may then not behave as intended.

If you email us or complete a form here, your message and contact details become part of our records and we use them only for the purpose you sent them for. We will not add you to a mailing list unless you ask, and every email we send to a list carries an unsubscribe link.

No transmission over the internet can be guaranteed secure. We protect what we hold, but anything you send us travels at your own risk.

How we protect and keep your information

Uniseed is a small team. We hold personal information in business systems provided by established software vendors and rely on the protections those systems offer, including access controls and multi-factor authentication where available. Paper records are held securely. We limit access to people who need it for their work, and we take reasonable steps to protect information against misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

We keep information only as long as we need it, or as long as the law requires - e.g. some records must be kept for extended periods under anti-money laundering and taxation legislation. Once we no longer need information and are not required to hold it, we take reasonable steps to destroy it or strip out anything identifying you.

If we become aware that personal information we hold has been lost, or accessed or disclosed without authorisation, we act quickly to contain it and assess whether it is likely to result in serious harm. Where the Privacy Act requires it, we notify the people affected and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Seeing your information, correcting it, and complaints

You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong, out of date, incomplete or misleading. Write to hello@uniseed.com. We will ask you to confirm your identity and to tell us clearly what you are after.

We will respond within 30 days. There is no charge for making a request, and no charge at all for a correction. Where we give you access we may charge the reasonable cost of retrieving and providing it, and will tell you what that is likely to be first. If we cannot give you access, or do not agree something needs correcting, we will tell you why in writing, explain how to complain about that decision including to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and record your view on our file.

If you think we have mishandled your personal information, please raise it with us first. Write to hello@uniseed.com or to us at the address below. We will acknowledge within 7 days and give you a substantive response within 30 days; if we need longer we will tell you why and agree a new timeframe. If our response does not satisfy you, you can take the matter to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

This process is for complaints about personal information. Uniseed provides financial services to wholesale clients only and is not a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.
