ActiveTorque Pty Ltd - Real time tuning of internal combustion engines
ActiveTorque is commercialising an innovative engine management technology that has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas and toxic emissions from motor vehicle engines. The ActiveTorque system utilises its patented LEO technology (Lerning Extremum Optimisation) to dynamically calculate the optimal engine operating settings, adapting to changing operating conditions as they occur. This novel approach to engine control optimises the performance of standard combustion engines to achieve maximum possible engine efficiency, without risking damage to the engine.

BT Imaging Pty Ltd - In-line Luminescence
Imaging for photovoltaic cells
BT Imaging technology is based on in line luminescence
imaging of silicon wafers and solar cells as a means of
quality control. This technology offers a superior
method for the inspection of silicon wafers and offers
manufacturers of the wafers significant throughput, performace
and cost advantages. The development is well advanced
and market opportunity is suppported by interest from
a number of firms. Existing production-line inspection
techniques for wafers are performed only late in the manufacturing
process when current-voltage characteristics of each complete
cell can be measured using contracting instruments.
Costs could be significantly lowered and product quality
enhanced if inspections were possible throughout the production
process. The inventors have produced a functional
prototype system that has been used frequently for consulting
work.

Cryptopharma Pty Ltd - Novel Anti-Inflammatory Therapeutics
Cryptopharma is a startup company dedicated to developing therapeutic treatments for anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory indications. Initial developments have centred on analogues of 2-methoxyestradiol (2MEO). The company has developed a family of compounds which are highly potent and selective inhibitors of smooth muscle cell proliferation, and which have demonstrated anti-asthmatic activity in in-vivo mouse models. It is believed that these compounds represent a totally novel therapeutic approach to treating inflammatory diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Fultec Semiconductor Inc- Protection of Electronic Circuits
Fultec has developed a technology for protecting electronic circuits from electrical power surges such as those from lightning strikes. The Uniseed investment is to develop the discrete device ready for sale. The device is a protection switch that virtually instantaneously disconnects vulnerable equipment from the disturbed input power terminal and then reconnects the system after the surge has passed. The device offers simpler, cheaper and higher performance protection than existing shunt protection devices which impact the performance of sensitive circuits (such as communications equipment) and limit circuit bandwidth because of circuit loading. The Co-Investors are Crescendo Ventures USA, Mayfield Ventures USA, ComVentures USA and Allen & Buckeridge.

Hydrexia Pty Ltd - Hydrogen Storage Systems

Hydrexia is developing hydrogen storage systems based on proprietary magnesium hydrides. The first market to be commercialised is the industrial hydrogen storage market. Hydrexia is developing prototypes that will address storage requirements in this market that range from 10 - 150 kgs with a buffer store of modular capacity of 10-60 kgs making up the first product line. These products would replace traditional pressurised gas systems (either pallets of manifolded cylinders, or tube trailers) and demonstrate advantages such as improved safety and handling, smaller footprint and better matching of customer usage needs. The total industrial hydrogen storage market (served by pallets, tube and tanker trailers) is estimated at USD 200 - 500 million per annum. The company also has the option of attacking the H2 storage needs if fuel-cell powered transport becomes reality.

Neurotide Pty Limited - New generation pain killers
Neurotide is developing the next generation of pain killers based on the body's own natural pain killer, endomorphin. Synthesised endomorphin can relieve pain when delivered directly to the brain, but has a short life span and is unsuitable as a drug without modifications. Neurotide is developing an orally available form of endomorphin for the treatment of chronic and acute pain as well as a new treatment for neuropathic pain, which can be caused by diabetes, injury and certain infections.
